COVID-19 Quarantine Day 32 - Friday's Adventures Part 3 - The Cow (Or Elephant) Graveyard

Ok, let's see, back to Friday...  Quick recap...  We went to Mama and Daddy's house.  I felt terrible because I misread my texts and the kids didn't get to help burn the pasture.  There was a freak dry lightning strike, so they got to see the rock garden burn as a consolation.  Connor thought it stunk.  He is obviously not my child.  Then we rode around in the gator.  Kids got to drive.  We went around the burned pasture, saw the ponds, told the kids the story of me getting stuck in the front pond, and they explored around the back ponds.

While we were out on the gator, we went to an area of the pasture that I hadn't been to before.  Apparently when a cow dies while out in the field, the farmer has an area where he hauls the carcass off to.  The coyotes are pretty thick where my parents live, and I imagine they like being in that area after a cow has died.  There are only 2 bulls and a cow out right now, so obviously there were no fresh carcasses there.  But there were bones!  Connor thought it looked like the elephant grave yard from The Lion King.  They climbed down into the ditch and started grabbing cow bones.  They had obviously been there for a while, there was no decomposing or rotting anything.  The bones were bleached white from having been in the sun, and between the time and the coyotes, they were all very clean.  The kids weren't scared at all.  They loved picking up different bones and learning where they would have gone on the cow.  You could see where the coyotes had spread the bones out.  Some skeletons were relatively in tact, where as others had pieces spread several feet from each other.  It was fascinating to see.  The kids had a wonderful time!  They each brought some bones back to the house to show Mama, who was obviously thrilled.  Before we left for the day, they had to go back and play some more.  I'm sure we'll be back many more times in the future!  I know Avery and Connor will be excited to show Dayton and Delaney the area!

Checking it all out for the first time.

Climbing down to get a closer look.

What's this?

Connor found a lower jaw!

Spine and hips

Pretty big!  And heavy!

Take a picture of me holding the bones, Mom!

Couple of skulls, might be available on ebay sometime...  ;-)
