I can't believe we're already at 50 days in Quarantine. It's been almost 2 months! It's all still very surreal. I know the state is going to start opening up beginning next week, but our family is planning on staying locked down for a while longer. Someone at Lifegroup last night mentioned that everything was supposed to be open again by the middle of June. That seems fast! I'm sure things will look different, though, than they did before this all began. I've been watching the daily case counts in Kansas for a while and I'm going to see how those continue to flush out once people are allowed to be out more before we start going out much. We'll see how things go. I'll probably be keeping an eye on how things are going in Tennessee and Kentucky because our vacation is scheduled for the end of June, so hopefully those areas are opened up a bit by then. Vacation may look very different this year. We'll see...
Anyway, one thing that won't change once people are allowed to be out and about it that I will still be talking about my garden non-stop! 😁 Let's talk about Bed 3!!
So I planted some plants in Bed 3 the other day, but I took this picture earlier in the day, so they aren't there. I'll get a new picture of this bed soon.
So quick rundown, Bed 3 is one of three new beds that went in this year. It is the northern most bed of the U shape we put in this year. I originally wanted to just plant seeds in it to see how they did, but (I know this will come as a shock) I'm impatient and couldn't do it. So a few plants went in this week. From the front to the back, we have Borage down the center and Nasturtiums (Nah-stur-shms) on the edges. Borage is an herb with blue flowers. The flowers and leaves are edible. It gets 18-36 inches tall. I planted it in the center so I wouldn't have to work around it and I hope the flowers bring pollinators to help with my squash plants. I think the flowers will be pretty in lemonade or ice cubes this summer. The Nasturtiums are flowers. I bought the dwarf mix because they only get 6-12 inches tall. They are colored like marigolds in red, orange, and yellow varieties. I'm hoping they, too, will bring in pollinators, plus they'll make the garden pretty! I'm looking forward to having flowers in the garden this year!
Between the Borage and the Nasturtiums is supposed to be two yellow squash in the front and two zucchinis behind it. I have planted and replanted the seeds, but they aren't coming up yet. That's why I bought two plants at Lowe's on Tuesday. I wanted to have an least a little something in the way of zucchini and squash. They seem to like warmer weather, so maybe they'll pop up soon as it continues to warm up.
Behind all of those seeds I planted three of my new plants, first the butternut squash and yellow squash, and behind them is an okra plant. I'm wishing now I had a spaghetti squash too. I love squash! Also wishing I had got another 1 or 2 okra plants, but I don't entirely know what I'm doing with a lot of these things, so I'll keep learning and do better next year. These are the 3 plants that made it into Bed 3.
I have more space behind those plants for things. I think I'll plant my remaining seedlings there. I have broccoli and lettuce seedlings still up on the deck.
Beyond that space I have a row of green onions that Connor planted a while back. They're doing great! I could probably start using them any time! Behind them are peas. Not all of the peas came up, so I planted some more, which are starting to sprout as of yesterday. I like peas because they grow fast and I can see things happening. I'll have to research how to blanch and freeze them because I can't can on my stovetop. We have an idea about putting some fencing up for them to climb, but I'm also, already thinking about next year and ways to make something better for them to climb. We'll see.
So that's Bed 3! Not quite as much as I posted the first time, but pretty respectable. Hope you enjoyed! More later! Bye!
