COVID-19 Quarantine Day 53

The kids are down to 3 weeks of school.  This last semester has really flown by!  It's had it's ups and downs with fear and anxiety from COVID-19 and figuring out how to do distance learning but also increased family time and more togetherness.  I know not all families have done as well through this time.  We are very fortunate to have had things relatively easy the last couple of months.  This week is Teacher Appreciation Week.  I wish I could do more for Avery and Connor's teachers.  They have been so wonderful all year and especially through this pandemic.  I didn't know either of them well at the beginning of the school year and had a few reservations.  But Sunflower doesn't have bad teachers.  Both of these women have loved on and challenged our kiddos and pushed them to get better all year long.  It has been a really good school year.  Things won't change a ton in our home once school is out for the summer.  The kids each have a list of items they have to complete each day.  These lists ensure that the kids are doing a little something productive for their brains, our home, and our family each day before they get to vedge out in front of technology.  😂  I've been pretty lenient on the lists while home school has been going on, because I didn't want to overwhelm them too bad.  They had lists similar to these last summer and it worked tremendously well.  😊  I'm hoping this summer goes as smoothly.

I'm sure you're probably tired of hearing about it, but my garden looks fabulous!!  Only a week or two ago it was mostly dirt.  Now I have plants in and seeds coming up and everything is looking super good!  I'm getting impatient with the asparagus and hope it will start popping up soon, but even the zucchini and yellow squash seeds that I planted, the ones I was worried weren't coming up (so I bought plants a week ago) are coming up now!  Check put how great it looks!!
This was 2 days ago...
This was 5 days ago...
This was 10 days ago...  (Looks like it was raining that day)
This was 11 days ago...
This was 12 days ago...
And finally, 16 days ago...
Quite the change in a little over 2 weeks!!  It's just going to get more and more lush and green!  I can't wait!  And then, eventually, flowers too!  I'm so excited!!

I planted an herb garden yesterday!  I've been trying to weed my herbs out of the regular garden because I think the seedlings look like weeds.  So I thought I'd try raising herbs up on the upper deck so I can keep a closer eye on them and the area won't be as prone to weeds, so it's less likely that I'll accidentally pull them out.  We'll see how it goes!  🤞
One of my Kindergarten students and her mom (the room mom for my Kindergarten class) came and decorated my front door and brought a treat for me for Teacher Appreciation Week!  It was so good to see them, and I feel so spoiled to have such a sweet class of kids!  ❤
Finally, when we opened the door, we also noticed that the flowers around the front flower bed were blooming!!  Look how pretty they are!!
Today is a great day!  ❤

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 52 - More Pictures

That was close!  It crashed twice, but somehow managed to save the blog!  Also it wouldn't publish on wifi, but once I turned it off and used data, it did fine.  The internet is weird.  So is my phone.  But I blame the crashing mostly on the app.  It's what has caused me to stop blogging all together, several times.  It's just too discouraging to lose all that work.
Here are more pictures to enjoy!  Hopefully no problems posting this blog at the end!!
Gardening Guard Dogs!
Avery's pictures from school
Gabby was having a really rough day moving the other day.  Michael thinks she might have pulled something.  So we let her lay on the bed with us that evening.  ❤🐺
Check out the ramen I made!!  Not bad!
On Wednesday Mama and Daddy brought Connor's birthday present over!!  He hasn't walked anywhere (but down the stairs) since then.  He hovers everywhere!  😂😂😂
Mama and Daddy also brought Arts over!!  😍😍😍

That's about all I have for now.  Pretty soon I need to post some of the new recipes we've tried lately!!  ❤  Have a nice Sunday!!!

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 52 - Pictures

Hey, I have a lot of pictures on my phone that I haven't posted on the blog in a while.  If I don't get them on here, I'll forget to do it.  So here are some snapshots of Quarantine Life lately!  ❤
Getting ready to watch Mulan outside last night
I watched the movie from the hammock!  Super comfy!
Morning garden!  😍  About 9am, full sun
Countryside had a family movie night!  We watched a FB Live video of the 3 children's ministry director's showing what special themed food and drinks and crafts and decor they had set up, then we posted pictures of what we were doing, making magic carpet crackers, on FB, then we all watched Aladdin from our own homes.  The kids chose the Live Action version.  It was the first I saw it!  It was really good!  This was Friday night.
Avery used her chalk combs to color her hair blue and then it got all over her face,  😂🤦🏼‍♀️  Probably not bathing the kids as often as we should.  But hey, Michael and I aren't showering as often as we should either because #QuarantineLife 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️
Mama got me 3 new Fiestaware settings!!!  😁😁😁😁  The daffodil color is exactly the same as the egg yolks!!
More pretty garden pics!  Can't remember if I posted them here or not.  I know they're on FB....

Ok, that's all for this post.  I still want it to actually post.  I'm also going to select all and copy this post to my clipboard in case it all goes kaput when I try to save it.  🤞

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 52 - Garden Bed 4

Alright, let's talk about my garden some more!  Bed 4 is a new bed put in this year.  It is the only bed that is different in both size and direction, from the other beds.  It is the bottom of the U shape we put in this year.  Instead of going east-west, and being 9x3 ft, this bed is positioned to go north-south and is 10x2 ft.  I only had it built 2 feet deep because it was going to go right up against the fence and I wouldn't be able to get to the other side of the box to weed and work on it.  So I needed it shallow enough that I could reach everything from one side.  This box gets the most, shade, I've noticed, because it is the first bed completely shaded when the sun gets close to noon.  It's also the first box to receive full sun in the morning because it's only 2 foot wide on the east-west side, once the sun gets over the house just a bit, that box is fully in the light, where as the other boxes have to wait for the shadow of the house to recede enough for them to get full sun.
When I take pictures of bed 4, I usually do it from the back corner of bed 5, so you can see the length of the box as opposed to the width, the same way the pictures are positioned for the other 4 beds.  This may be a lot more difficult once the corn gets very big...  We'll see...
Anyway, here's what you're looking at, starting in the back and moving to the foreground of the picture.  At the very north end of Bed 4 are 4 broccoli plants from Valley Feeds and Seed.

A little closer, but looking almost exactly the same, are 6 cauliflower plants from Menards.

Last year my broccoli did well until it got hot.  My cauliflower never set heads.  I'm hoping both do a little better this year with me getting them into the ground as early in the season as possible.  I also have 4 broccoli seedlings upstairs on the upper deck.  My hope is that they will be planted in bed 3 in the leftover space in the next week, and we'll see how they fair in the actual garden.  Almost all of my seedlings have transplanted well to the garden.  I would say the only exceptions might be the peas.  The peas that I started in the garden, right in the beds, however, are doing marvelous!  And I should mention, the pack of seeds I used were 25 cents and from Dollar Tree, so I think I'm getting my money's worth on those!  They were also expired in 2017.  😉  Not bad!  But back to Bed 4!  In the middle of the 2 rows of broccoli and cauliflower are Nasturtiums, the flowers on the edges of Bed 3, around the yellow squash and zucchini seeds.  I think there were probably 4-5 planted.  So far I have 2 coming up.  This week I'll be going through each bed and it things aren't popping up, that were started as seeds, I'm going to replant.  The last time I planted seeds was over 2 weeks ago, so if things aren't coming up yet, I don't think they're going to.  On the from edge of this bed, the right edge in the picture, in front of the cauliflower and broccoli, is supposed to be some sort of herb, sage or thyme, I think.  There's also supposed to be a row between some of the cauliflower plants, of the other herb.  However, I don't know what either is supposed to look like when it comes up, so I'm just letting the weeds grow, I fear.  Herbs are probably best grown in some sort of a container.  Maybe I'll grab one of the big pots from under my deck today, fill it with soil from the dirt pile, and bring it to the upper deck to plant herbs in.  Then I can leave the garden to the big plants.  Or maybe, in the future, plant herbs in pots and then move the pots to the garden area and just sit in front or next to the various plants.  I'm not sure yet.  All I know at the moment is that I want to weed the herbs and I can't tell the difference.  Sorry, keep getting on these tangents, that's what you get for reading my train-of-thought blog.  Fun ride, huh?
Moving more to the foreground from the cauliflower is green onions.  I think these were planted a week or two ago.  They are doing awesome!  I think in all I have about 60-70 green onion plants between bed 3 and 4.  I started using some on Friday!  They are delicious!
(This is an older picture, they're much bigger now!)

Next to the green onions is a hill.  It's supposed to have 3 or 4 cucumber plants in it.  However, only one seed sprouted.  I think I mentioned this before, but another seed seems to have washed out of the hill and into the crack where the dirt pulls away from the side of the box when it's dry.  It has sprouted there.  Michael asked me yesterday if I was going to try to move it back into the hill, but I think I'm just going to leave it where it is.  I'll probably end up planting a few more seeds in the hill as well.

Finally, the last thing in Bed 4, in the foreground of the picture, is where 2 zucchini are planted.  So far, one of them has sprouted, but I don't think you can see it in the picture, as I think it just happened in the last couple of days.  The zucchini, along with the zucchini plants nearby in bed 5, are a part of the 3 sisters growing I'm doing in bed 5 with the corn and beans.  If the other seed comes up, I'll have 4 zucchini plants in all, around the corn and beans.  The zucchini plants will shade and cool the root areas of the corn and beans.  Their prickly vines also keep undesirable insects away from the corn and beans.  Also, their leave leaves provide living mulch for the soil which helps all 3 plants.  We'll see how things go.  The plant from Lowe's looks awesome, the zucchini seedling I started inside seems to be really flourishing in the garden bed, and one of my 2 seeds in bed 4 have sprouted so far, so not too bad!  Also, if everything comes up and produces, I'll have 6 zucchini plants and 3 yellow squash plants!  Plus a butternut squash plant and *fingers crossed* a spaghetti squash plant later!  Yay!!!  I love squash!!

So that's Bed 4!  I hope you've enjoyed these updates on my various garden boxes and how each of the plants are doing!

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 52 - Saturday Happenings

Good Morning, Everyone!  I hope you had a nice Saturday!  I didn't blog because we were too busy doing family stuff all day.  Here are some highlights of our day...

When the kids woke up, I was already up and in the shower.  They started the day like they like to start every weekend morning and crawled into our bed.  Connor wanted to snuggle and Avery wanted to have a tickle fight.  Michael became the wall between them, snuggling with Connor on one side and attacking/repelling Avery's attacks on the other side.  This is our life.  😂

After I got out of the shower and dressed (in real clothes, as it was a special day, my weekly shower) I made breakfast for the fam.  We had bacon and egg sandwiches in different configurations.  Connor didn't want bacon, Avery wanted only bacon, then decided she'd go ahead and take egg too if it could have American cheese on it, Michael and Connor wanted ketchup, Michael and I wanted bacon and egg but no cheese because we're out of Swiss.  We ate our breakfast out on the upper deck.  We listened to music, mostly Disney covers, Greatest Showman covers, metal versions of Disney songs, punk versions of Disney songs, Disney mashups with other Disney songs, Disney mashups with regular songs, Mashups of Disney villain songs, more Johnathon Young songs, more Sam Tsui songs, Lindsey Stirling, funny old songs that Michael and I discovered in college, and other stuff like that.  Check out the links, they're super fun/beautiful/different.  I recommend each and every song!  Avery really likes the one from college.  Michael really likes Lindsey Stirling.  Connor would really like it if we would listen to the regular Disney songs instead.  😂😂😂

After breakfast I went out to work on/check on my garden.  I have both zucchini seeds and both yellow squash seeds coming up in box 3 now!!  I'll have to get some pictures today to post, they were getting close to sprouting yesterday, if the sun goes ahead and comes out this morning, I think they'll pop the rest of the way out!  😁  The corn is growing like weeds!  It needs to be about 6 inches tall before I'm supposed to plant the beans around them.  I think by next weekend I'll be doing that.  Also, I think one of my corn kernels that I soaked ended up washing down the little hill and growing there.  I'm not entirely sure, but I'm pretty sure that's what's at the bottom there.  It's spaced well from the rest of the corn though, so I'm planning on just leaving it.  I think the same thing happened with a cucumber.  They were originally planted on a small hill, but now I have a cucumber who's growing in the crack where the dirt pulls away from the edge of the box when it gets dry.  I guess I know that one will probably never be wanting for water...  Some of my lettuce seedlings are coming up, as well as more marigolds in box 1.  There are a few places where I don't know what the plant (usually herbs) that I planted should look like, so at the moment I'm letting everything, including weeds, grow without pulling anything until I decide what should be there and what shouldn't.  I have a whole lot of, what looks like, grass this year that I don't remember dealing with last year.  I remember the little seeds off of the trees over the garden, but not the grass.  I think something may have been in the soil I got delivered.  So I've been pulling weeds and grass daily to keep things at bay.  When I work on it daily, it never gets too bad at one time.

Michael also pruned the trees back a little for me, away from the garden.  There are still tall branches hanging over the garden that he couldn't get to, even when he added big metal poles to his trimming sheers to add torque and length.  But the garden should be getting at least a little more sun now.  He also pulled up the bind weed and the various other weeds and sapplings that were right next to the fence and the garden.  I laid out in the sun while he was working and burnt my back and the back of my legs.  Not too bad, as I was only out for a little over an hour, but I am extremely pale at the moment.  Guess that's what I get for laying out in the sun while he works on my garden for me.  😂😂

It got pretty warm yesterday!  I want Spring and all, but I don't want to skip straight to summer!  Mid-day we came in and enjoyed the AC, rested from the sun zapping us all, and watched some TV.  Sis had told me she bought the new, animated Addam's Family movie and that it was on her Amazon account, so I logged in and let the kids watch that.  They liked it a lot.  Meanwhile, Michael and I finally got around to watching the new Parks and Rec special that was released on Thursday.  We had Lifegroup at that time, so we couldn't watch it live.  I just have to say, it was done so incredibly well!  It made me so so happy!  I donated money when it was all over because it was so good and a good cause, and, I think, the actors are good people for coming back together to put this on for the sake of helping others.  It was just good, all around!  Loved it!  Then Michael and I were singing 5000 Candles in the Wind for the rest of the evening.  I asked Michael to play it at my funeral.  He said he couldn't because he plans on dying first.  So I texted Sis and asked her to play it at my funeral.  Her reply: "Definitely."  I knew I could count on her!  😉

We grilled for dinner, on request of the kids.  We made Kippy Burgers, Hotdogs, and Grilled Asparagus.  It was delicious, as always!  Michael added some grated Parmesan cheese to the Kippy Burger mixture this time as well.  I couldn't taste the parm, but they still mght have been the best batch of Kippy burgers we've ever whipped up.  So good!  It also might have been Michael's homemade BBQ sauce in them too, I don't know.  All I know is that they were delicious!

After dinner, Michael started getting out the outdoor movie projector stuff.  The kids were really excited!  Of course, the movie wasn't enough for my girl, so she kept asking Michael to build a fire in the fire pit and put them tent up.  Unfortunately, all the got was the movie last night.  But she also got some popcorn and a couple things of candy, so she was pretty happy.  Then she saw the neighbors out on their front lawn and went to invite them to join us in watching the movie.  They explained to her that they were having a birthday party and offered her and Connor a piece of cake.  Then they said after the party was over, they'd come check it out.  So the kids also got chocolate cake to go with their movie, which, I'm pretty sure, they ate with their fingers.  😂  About 30 minutes or so into the movie (we watched Mulan because it's one of Michael's and my favorites) 3 teen/preteen girls came into our back yard to join us for the movie.  It was dark by then, so I couldn't even tell who they were, only make out shapes.  Michael thinks it was the neighbor girl and 2 of her friends.  Anyway, they sat down behind Avery and Connor, who were laying on some blankets they had laid out, and watched the rest of the movie with us.  The kids and the girls talked about how they liked this movie and Avery went in and got them each a FunDip to enjoy with the movie.  It was fun and nice.  After the movie was over, the girls left and as we were bringing everything back into the house Avery said her favorite part of the night was when the big kids came over.  😊💗  I think she's pretty starved for interaction with people other than her family, but then again, she's always been a social little butterfly, so even if everything was normal in the world, that would have probably been her favorite part.  I told Michael that it was just what we needed in the world right now, to have the neighbors over to watch a movie outdoors with us and maintain that sense of community and togetherness.  The girls and the kids, I'm certain, were not thinking so deeply about an outdoor movie invitation.  That's fine.  Just made me happy.  Avery is a lot like me.  The event was fun and all, but it was the people there who really made it special.  💗💗💗

So it was after 10, maybe closer to 1030 before the kids got to bed last night.  But that's working in our favor today because it's almost 9 now and they're still asleep.  😉  So that's how our day went yesterday.  I hope yours was good as well, and I hope you have a terrific Sunday!  Love you!

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 50 - Garden Furniture

I think my favorite place to blog from is outside on our upper deck.  I've got a cup of coffee and it's shaded (almost wrote shady, then decided better of it) and breezy.  It's just perfect!  I spend quite a bit of time out here these days.  ❤  I think between up here and when I eventually have a small table and a couple chairs out in the garden, I'll be outside all of the Spring and Summer.  ☀️❤🌻🥬🍓🌱🍅🌴🥕🌬🌽🌼⛈🌸🌶🌳🥒🌪🌿🥦☔🧅☘

I'm looking at tables and chairs now on the Menards website!  These are cool, but a little spendy.  This one is super cute!  I love the blue and the wicker look!  Plus they swivel!  And are about half the price of the first one.  This one looks kind of similar to the blue one.  A little loveseat and coffee table is another idea I hadn't thought of before.  That could work too!

Onto Lowe's!  This set has something I haven't seen before with the footstool that slide under the chairs.  I kinda like that!  Doesn't take up as much space when you're just sitting.  This one is awesome, but I get the impression it won't fit in the garden...  Maybe just for the yard!  Think I can talk Michael into it??  😉😁  I originally thought I wanted something cute and little like this, but now I'm thinking I want something a little comfier. Also sturdier to support my extra quarantine weight...

Alright, how about Home Depot.  This they have anything I haven't seen at the other 2 places?  This set is cute, although I'd like it in something darker to match the fence in the garden.  These are nice, but I worry about hail with the glass table.  This set looks cute and modern, but it doesn't have very good reviews.  I like this set, but, again, not sure about the glass table top.  Love this one, but woah!  The price!  I like this set too, especially the shelf on the table!  Don't know what I'd put there, but it looks good in the pictures.  I'm not nuts about the cushion color on this set, but I suppose they'd be easy to change or add any color throw pillow to them.  Home Depot had a lot more stuff to choose from than I expected.

Maybe I'll check Sam's too and then call it a dat with the online shopping/browsing.  😉  These chairs, I feel like I've seen before, but the table looks a little larger and I love the tile on it!  This one is cute too.

Well, there are certainly lots of ideas out there!  Now I have a post to come back to with lots of ideas!  If you love something, comment or send me a text and vote on what you think I should get.  😊

**Edit**
Had to add this picture.  😊  This is where I'll be enjoying my days after 2:30pm.  ❤
Also, Harlee came to see me while I was sitting on the ground, lol!

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 50 - Cloud Eggs

Ok, slight time out on the garden posts to talk about Michael's and my breakfast!  Cloud eggs!  They were pretty easy, super tasty, and they look awesome!  Plus, I used some of Connor's green onion from the garden!!
Aren't they pretty????
I tried to completely pull one of the onions out, but it was rooted good and didn't want to let go, so I just took the tops and hope they'll continue to produce all season!
The egg whites look all cloudy because I whipped them up really good!  Then I folded in the green onion and parmesan!  😋
Michael and I thought they were great and give this recipe 4 out of 4 stars!

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 50 - Garden Bed 3

Ok, trying this again.  As I've mentioned before, it won't be as good as the first one, because now I've wasted 30 minutes and have to redo everything, but I'll try to hit the major points.

I can't believe we're already at 50 days in Quarantine.  It's been almost 2 months!  It's all still very surreal.  I know the state is going to start opening up beginning next week, but our family is planning on staying locked down for a while longer.  Someone at Lifegroup last night mentioned that everything was supposed to be open again by the middle of June.  That seems fast!  I'm sure things will look different, though, than they did before this all began.  I've been watching the daily case counts in Kansas for a while and I'm going to see how those continue to flush out once people are allowed to be out more before we start going out much.  We'll see how things go.  I'll probably be keeping an eye on how things are going in Tennessee and Kentucky because our vacation is scheduled for the end of June, so hopefully those areas are opened up a bit by then.  Vacation may look very different this year.  We'll see...

Anyway, one thing that won't change once people are allowed to be out and about it that I will still be talking about my garden non-stop!  😁  Let's talk about Bed 3!!
So I planted some plants in Bed 3 the other day, but I took this picture earlier in the day, so they aren't there.  I'll get a new picture of this bed soon.

So quick rundown, Bed 3 is one of three new beds that went in this year.  It is the northern most bed of the U shape we put in this year.  I originally wanted to just plant seeds in it to see how they did, but (I know this will come as a shock) I'm impatient and couldn't do it.  So a few plants went in this week.  From the front to the back, we have Borage down the center and Nasturtiums (Nah-stur-shms) on the edges.  Borage is an herb with blue flowers.  The flowers and leaves are edible.  It gets 18-36 inches tall.  I planted it in the center so I wouldn't have to work around it and I hope the flowers bring pollinators to help with my squash plants.  I think the flowers will be pretty in lemonade or ice cubes this summer.  The Nasturtiums are flowers.  I bought the dwarf mix because they only get 6-12 inches tall.  They are colored like marigolds in red, orange, and yellow varieties.  I'm hoping they, too, will bring in pollinators, plus they'll make the garden pretty!  I'm looking forward to having flowers in the garden this year!

Between the Borage and the Nasturtiums is supposed to be two yellow squash in the front and two zucchinis behind it.  I have planted and replanted the seeds, but they aren't coming up yet.  That's why I bought two plants at Lowe's on Tuesday.  I wanted to have an least a little something in the way of zucchini and squash.  They seem to like warmer weather, so maybe they'll pop up soon as it continues to warm up.

Behind all of those seeds I planted three of my new plants, first the butternut squash and yellow squash, and behind them is an okra plant.  I'm wishing now I had a spaghetti squash too.  I love squash!  Also wishing I had got another 1 or 2 okra plants, but I don't entirely know what I'm doing with a lot of these things, so I'll keep learning and do better next year.  These are the 3 plants that made it into Bed 3.
They all look good and healthy.  Hopefully the other squash come up too.  But who knows?  🤷🏼‍♀️

I have more space behind those plants for things.  I think I'll plant my remaining seedlings there.  I have broccoli and lettuce seedlings still up on the deck.

Beyond that space I have a row of green onions that Connor planted a while back.  They're doing great!  I could probably start using them any time!  Behind them are peas.  Not all of the peas came up, so I planted some more, which are starting to sprout as of yesterday.  I like peas because they grow fast and I can see things happening.  I'll have to research how to blanch and freeze them because I can't can on my stovetop.  We have an idea about putting some fencing up for them to climb, but I'm also, already thinking about next year and ways to make something better for them to climb.  We'll see.
So that's Bed 3!  Not quite as much as I posted the first time, but pretty respectable.  Hope you enjoyed!  More later!  Bye!

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 50

Ugh.  It happened again.  Typed a whole long blog, then it crashed.  I think, because I added pictures from Google Photos instead of my phone.  Oh well.  Nothing I can do now.  I have a meeting in 10, so I can't retype it all now.  Grr!  That was a good post too.  This program was new and good when I was in college and now it's kinda buggy, especially the app for my phone.  *sigh*  I'll be back later.
